Volvo 9900 - Design that reinforces exclusivity

Volvo 9900

The Volvo 9900 is the most luxurious coach offered by Volvo Buses. With theater flooring, sloping window line, large glass panels and an elegant interior, it provides passengers a bus ride exceeding the conventional.

The Volvo 9900 is basically a more luxurious version of the Volvo 9700, which was named Coach of the Year 2008. The models share the renowned fuel-efficient driveline, drivability, comfort and the innovative safety solutions. However, the Volvo 9900 has a number of features that make it a tourist coach for passengers with high demands.

With its smooth surfaces, clean lines and a distinct Volvo character, the exterior of the Volvo 9900 radiates powerful elegance. In terms of design, there are a number of features that contribute to the strengthened power and elegance in this coach model.

The area around the license plate in the front is black to enhance the visual impact. The area above the front windshield is painted black to extend the windshield upward and make the corners rounder and smoother.

On the sides, the radiator grill has an elegant, diamond-like shape. The grills are fitted diagonally and therefore harmonize with the sloping window line. At the rear of the coach, the Volvo 9900 has a distinct profile as a result of the silver-toned edging around the air exhaust vent.

13 different interior color themes

Volvo’s designers have produced 13 different interior color themes, with the roof, walls, floor, drapes and seat upholstery matching one another.

The passenger seats in the Volvo 9900 are the best available, each equipped with a table, footrest, net pocket and handle. The noise level is low and the interior feels spacious and airy. Electronically controlled air suspension with independent front suspension and a rigid frame design also contribute to the high comfort level.

Volvo 9900 - Inside view

All passengers in the Volvo 9900 have the possibility to enjoy the view of beautiful landscapes and exciting buildings. Due to the theater flooring, sloping window line and large glass panels, everyone has an unobstructed view. Tinted windows are available as an option.

The coach features an efficient climate control system, with air-conditioning and individually adjustable air nozzles at each seat. The interior baggage compartments are the aircraft type and provide adequate space for personal belongings.

It is important to have an AV system in a tourist coach in which all passengers hear and see well. Volvo Sound & Vision is among the best there is to offer in the industry, with authentic HiFi sound and razor-sharp 17’’ TFT screens.

A number of safety functions

Safety is a prioritized area at Volvo and this applies in the highest degree to the Volvo 9900. The foundation is first-class road handling and a new driver’s compartment that provides the driver with all the possibilities to drive the bus in a safe and responsible manner.

Moreover, the bus also has a number of safety functions to assist the driver. The bus features large rearview mirrors with integrated close-view mirrors and cameras at the doors and in the far rear. Powerful headlights with BiXenon lamps and large brake lights installed high reduce the risk of accidents.

The Volvo 9900 is equipped with electronically controlled disc brakes, Volvo’s powerful engine brake and compact retarder. The Volvo 9900 is standard equipped with ESP (Electronic Stability Program), which sharply reduces the risk of the coach rolling over or running off the road.

The coach features FIP (Front Impact Protection), which Volvo was the first in the industry to introduce two years ago. It is a reinforced front to increase protection for the driver and the guide in the event of a collision.

Front Underrun Protection System (FUPS)

Volvo Buses was also the first in the industry to launch front underrun protection, FUPS. This is a steel beam at the lowest point of the front-end that prevents a passenger car from being wedged under the bus. This substantially increases the chances of the driver and passengers in a car surviving a head-on collision with the bus.

Volvo Buses has also increased protection for the driver’s knees and thighbones in the Volvo 9900. There are structural elements behind the panels beside the steering wheel that collapse and absorb energy should the driver’s knees strike the panel in a collision.

The driver plays a key role for the experiences of a tourist trip. Accordingly, it is important that the driver’s work environment is the very best, which it is in a Volvo 9900. The driver enters through a separate door into a driver compartment with a newly designed instrument panel.

The controls are grouped logically and are easily accessible. The climate in the driver’s compartment is controlled separately and comfort features include electric windows, electrically operated sun visors and a navigation system as standard.

Powerful engines

The driver has access to all the power the coach needs for a smooth and safe trip. The engine is the latest generation of Volvo’s 12-liter engine, DH12E. The engine is installed at the rear of the bus and is available in two power outputs: 420 hp (309 kW) (2000 Nm) and 460 hp (338 kW) (2200 Nm).

The driver also benefits from the Volvo 9900 being equipped with Volvo I-shift, the highly praised automatic gearchanging system. It delivers exceptional drivability due among other features to minimizing the number of gear changes and that a high and uniform average speed can be maintained.

The engine and I-shift also contribute to good environmental characteristics and favorable overall economy. Volvo has chosen to use SCR technology to meet today’s and tomorrow’s emissions standards. SCR is a simple, proven and reliable technology that contributes to lower fuel consumption. The Volvo I-shift offers the comfort and smoothness of an automatic gearbox combined with the lower fuel consumption of a manual gearbox.

The Volvo 9900 is 3.80 meters high and 2.55 meters wide. It is available as a 4x2 at 12.3 meter in length or 6x2 versions at 13.0 or 13.8 meters.
