More bus, but still less weight

Although the new Tourismo RHD has grown by a few centimetres compared with its predecessor, and although it features the Front Collision Guard (FCG) to provide better protection for the driver and front-seat occupant in the event of a collision, it weighs noticeably less. This is because the timelessly attractive outer shell of the Tourismo RHD is not the only new element, but also the self-supporting framework immediately beneath it. Thanks to new node elements made up of optimised pillar cross-sections, the new framework is both stronger and lighter in weight.

The now lighter high-decker therefore meets the forthcoming even more stringent regulations according to UN ECE R66.02 for the residual survival space to be preserved in the passenger compartment after a rollover accident. The new Tourismo has not only proved this improved stability in countless computations, but also in practice: Mercedes-Benz has thoroughly tested the bodyshell of the high-deck model, including the interior ceiling, on the servohydraulic test rig. The development engineers have meticulously examined every single detail with an eye to weight, which is why even the air-conditioning system is now appreciably lighter in weight, although its performance remains as hitherto.

All in all, the weight of the two-axle model, compared with its predecessor, has been reduced by around 200 kg for a vehicle with identical engine and specification. For the weight-sensitive two-axle models above all, this increases the payload reserves for a comfortably appointed coach with a full complement of passengers and luggage. Furthermore, the Tourismo RHD benefits from the increase in permissible gross vehicle weight for buses and coaches in the EU, in the case of a two-axle model up to 19.5 t. As a three-axle model, the new Tourismo RHD is licensed at 24.75 t.
